The UPSC Mains test contains Hindi in the list of subjects of optional subjects for the Mains IAS exam. Hindi is also one of the choices for mandatory language paper in IAS Mains. All candidates except candidates coming from the north-eastern states of Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland are compelled to take this paper.
